Gate to Hades
Many funerary monuments from the Greek and Roman eras include portraits of the deceased, but this tombstone takes the simple form of a gate or doorway, representing the entrance to the underworld of Hades. Elevated atop three stairs, the double doors are beautifully adorned with three horizontal decorative bands. The Greek inscription above the gate includes the names of the tomb’s owners and warns that strangers are banned from occupying the site, before concluding with a greeting to passersby.
