Elderly Mother at Peace
This work was produced by Hirakushi Denchu after being commissioned by Okada Gyujiro of Heiando, a calligraphy store that still remains in Chiyoda, Tokyo, in commemoration of the 13th anniversary of his mother Ume’s death. When this work was submitted to the Exhibition of the Japan Art Institute, the Yi Royal Family Art Museum showed its intention to purchase it and Denchu produced and delivered the same statue to the Yi family, while sending the original work to the client Okada. Denchu is known to have produced the same works several times by using a wooden plaster mold and a compass.
