Kohime, Noh Mask

This kohime mask is a kind of koomote (young female) masks. It is also one of the onnamen (female) masks that express women of various ages and personalities. This mask is used to portray the role of an innocent young woman. The mask’s chubby cheeks, long and thin eyes and mouth with corners slightly curled up express the vitality of youth. The inside of the mask was engraved with the word “小姬” (kohime) and burned with a seal reading “兒玉近江,” the name of the Noh mask craftsman Kodama Mitsumasa (1611-1704).
