Buddhist Guardian

This head of a Buddhist guardian was excavated from Turpan in western China. The round face is delicately described, with wavy hair parted in the middle, distinctively arched eyebrows, slender eyes, and a prominent bridge of the nose. The crowding of the eyes, nose, and mouth in the center of the face is characteristic of Central Asian sculpture. The statue was originally painted in color, as evidenced by traces of green pigment that remain on the edge of the face and the upper part of the head.
