Remembering Lee Hong-kun in the Autumn of 2021
Commemorative Exhibition for the 40th Anniversary of the Lee Hong-kun Gallery
Forty years ago, on October 13, 1981, the National Museum of Korea opened the first permanent gallery dedicated to exhibiting artworks donated by a private collector.
The Dongwon Memorial Gallery is today known as the Lee Hong-kun Gallery. It displays the Dongwon Collection collected by the late Lee Hong-kun (1900–1980; sobriquet: Dongwon), an entrepreneur who was born and raised in Kaesong, North Korea. His collection was later donated to the museum by his bereaved family, including Lee Sang-yong.
The vast array of works in the collection includes ceramics, paintings and calligraphy, metalwork, and sculpture from Korea, China, and Japan. It has long provided visitors with visual pleasure and new inspirations.
In celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the opening of the gallery, the museum is presenting unique works of ceramics and painting representative of the collection. It is hoped that visitors will remember and appreciate the efforts that the late Lee Hong-kun and his family exerted in acquiring and conserving these works.
