Thematic Exhibition:  Buddhist Hanging Scroll at Okcheonsa Temple in Goseong

The National Museum of Korea presents gwaebul- Buddhist hanging scroll - from Okcheonsa temple in Goseong at its annual thematic exhibition of 2017. This scroll, created in 1808, is one of the rare Buddhist paintings produced in the early 19th century. The gwaebul is over ten meters in size, and its grand sublimity exuding from various tones of red and distinct patterns overwhelms the viewer. This exhibition exclusively reveals the crate used for storing the scroll. The crate boasts exquisite elegance of woodcraft and historical significance as it shows where the scroll was stored while special rituals were not held. Multiple artifacts from Okcheonsa Temple are also exhibited to add the enchantment. It will be a fascinating chance to appreciate the value of the scroll as well as the history and culture of Okcheonsa Temple in Goseong, Gyeongsangnam-do.
