The National Museum of Korea has selected 20 Masterpeices (M20) from its collection to commemorate the 2010 G20 Seoul Summit.
Korea’s foremost museum, the National Museum of Korea houses some 250,000 cultural properties from the prehistoric era to the Joseon period (1392-1910), representing the essence of Korean culture. The nominees for the 20 masterpieces were selected by considering the degree to which they represented different periods of history and the distinctive features of their category of artwork and how they were appraised by scholars, as well as how well they harmonized in the display room and fit into the overall exhibit. Following multiple stages of review and soliciting of recommendations, the 20 masterpieces of the National Museum of Korea were selected.
The selected masterpieces represent different periods, ideologies, and forms of expression in the formative arts, but nevertheless they are characterized by a consistent artistic sense. They are imbued with the Korean spirit, and there is an inherent originality in them, which can be appreciated by people around the world.
The M20 will help museum visitors more easily understand Korea’s traditional culture and history.
