At the beginning of the Revised Edition of the Great Compassion Repentance Ritual, illustrations and the names of eight Buddhas, including the Seven Past Buddhas and Maitreya Buddha, are presented. This scripture provides guidance on how to sincerely pray to the Buddhas of the ten directions and the three times (past, present, and future), repent of all evil deeds and karmic sins, and aspire to rebirth in the Pure Land. The inclusion of the Buddhas’ names and images at the beginning of the text reflects the ritual practice of invoking and venerating multiple Buddhas.
The scripture was first compiled during the reign of Emperor Wu (r. 502–549) of the Liang Dynasty in China. It was titled Sanggyojeongbon (“Revised Edition”) because its contents were compared with and examined against various existing versions to ensure accuracy. While the exact publication date remains unknown due to a lack of records, it is believed to have been printed using woodblocks carved during the Goryeo period and was likely published between the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods. The name of its owner, Sindam, is written at the end of the book’s front side, and the back contains a note stating, “In the first year of the Zhengde era (1506), in October, Sindam received this sutra from Seongjang.”
