Sun, Moon, and Five Peaks

This screen illustrates the Sun, Moon, and Five Peaks, also known as Irwol obongdo in Korean. It is a symbolic painting representing the king. Irwol obongdo are characterized by a highly schematized composition and standardized motifs. Among the five peaks, the central one is depicted as the tallest. The sun and moon are positioned on the right and left sides of the sky, respectively. Below the peaks, waves ripple across the water, and hills rise with two red pine trees standing tall. Compared to other Irwol obongdo, this example features more prominent mountains, while the waves are depicted more shallowly. Given its small size, it was likely designed for portability and used during the king’s royal tour.
