Shin Yunbok was a court painter, following in the footsteps of his father, Shin Hanpyeong (1726 – ?), who was also a court painter. Renowned for his depictions of women’s customs and artistic pastimes, including those of courtesans, Shin captured scenes of urban life with delicate brushwork and beautiful colors. His refined and elegant style presents a contrast to the candid and unembellished approach of Kim Hongdo’s genre paintings. These paintings belong to an album consisting of depictions of women engaged in various activities. A Woman by the Lotus Pond captures a moment when a woman, having played the saenghwang to ease the boredom of an early summer afternoon, pauses and turns her head, seemingly sensing someone’s presence. The composition achieves a harmonious balance between the straight, simple lines of the veranda on which she sits and the lush lotus leaves, rendered in soft hues.
