One of the key tenets of Confucian ethics is the “Three Bonds,” which are the three fundamental principles of human relations: loyalty between ruler and subject, filial piety between father and son, and female devotion between husband and wife. By the order of King Sejong, Seol Sun and other scholars compiled these exemplary stories of loyal subjects, filial sons, and faithful women from Korean and Chinese history, and published this illustrated guide in 1434. Later, an abridged version and a version with annotations in Hangeul were published.
