These shoes, each made from three gold-plated sheets, were discovered near the feet of the deceased in Shingnichong Tomb in Gyeongju. The edge of each sole is lined with small beads and a band of wave patterns. The central section of each sole is decorated with a tortoiseshell pattern and multiple lotus insignias, placed at regular intervals. The hexagonal tiles of the tortoiseshell pattern are decorated with various images, such as repeating monstrous faces and large birds; symmetrical pairs of hexagonal tiles containing the image of a Kalavinka (an animal with the body of a bird and a human face), a giraffe, birds, and a winged fish can also be seen. Images of a tiger or dragon can also be found near the heels of the soles.
