Epitaph Tablet of Daughter of Kim Jiwon

This is the tombstone for a daughter of Kim Ji-won, who was a hyangni in Gyeongju. Presumably, her father’s name, not her name, was inscribed because she was unmarried when she died and buried in Gaegyeong, the capital of Goryeo, far away from her hometown. One theory is that she came to Gaegyeong for sightseeing, following her father, who might have come to the capital city as a representative of Gyeongju. Her father might not have been able to bring her back home when she died, and proceeded with her funeral in Gaegyeong. The monument is shaped like a flower with eight petals, apparently expressing the father’s broken heart over his beloved young daughter.
