Plum Blossoms Studio
In the nineteenth-century Joseon, plum blossom paintings (maehwado) and paintings of plum blossoms around studios (maehwa seookdo) enjoyed wide popularity. At the center of this painting stands a large plum tree perched on a hill, beneath which a figure crosses a bridge, seemingly on his way to visit a friend. Meanwhile, another figure gazes out from the window of a small house on the hill. Jeon Gi painted the plum tree, hill, and house with simple, concise brushstrokes, while the plum blossoms were vividly rendered with white dots, evoking the image of snow gently resting upon them.
