This reliquary was found in 1942 from the three-story stone pagoda erected at the temple site known as Hwangboksa Temple. A silver casket in which a gold casket was contained was placed in the middle of an outer gilt-bronze casket along and offerings. On the inside of the casket’s lid is an inscription about the construction of the stone pagoda and the enshrinement of the relics. On the four sides of this casket are 99 miniature pagodas etched in dotted lines. According to the inscription on the casket’s lid, a copy of the Great Dharani sutra of Immaculate and Pure Light was enshrined in the pagoda. The sutra translated in Tang China in 704 describes the idea of accumulating merits with pagodas and dharani prayers, and it specifically mentions the practice of making 99 small pagodas.
