Buncheong Barrel-shaped Jar with Peony Design in Iron-brown Underglaze

Buncheong Barrel-shaped Jar with Peony Design in Iron-brown Underglaze
Jars such as this, with a barrel-shaped body and an oval foot, were used to store wine, water, or soy sauce. This jar was vertically coated with a thick layer of white slip, and then a wave pattern was freely painted in iron-brown underglaze around the top and bottom. The body is decorated with a design of a peony in full bloom, with large robust petals. The vivid contrast between the dark brown patterns and the ivory background enhances the bold and dynamic atmosphere.
