Buncheong Flattened Bottle with Incised Flower Design
Buncheong ware was not only produced for the government and royal court; it was also used to make everyday objects for ordinary people. For example, flattened bottles such as this were widely used to transport water or alcohol. To make this type of bottle, a regular round bottle was first made on the potter’s wheel, and then two sides were flattened with tapping, which allowed the potter to control the flatness or roundness of the bottle. The bottle is decorated on both sides with a simple incised floral pattern, consisting of a few petals and a stem. The natural flow of the translucent greyish-green glaze from the shoulder yields a contemporary sensibility.
