Gilt-bronze Amitabha Buddha Triad

Amitabha Buddha is the Buddha of the Pure Land, or Western Paradise. Buddhists frequently chant the name of Amitabha Buddha, because it is believed that any person who calls on Amitabha Buddha with pure faith will be taken into the Pure Land. Amitabha Buddha is often depicted with two attendant bodhisattvas, forming a triad. The figure on the right is Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, symbolizing compassion, and the figure on the left is Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva, symbolizing wisdom. Made of copper, then coated with lacquer and a layer of gold leaf, this Amitabha statue epitomizes the refinement and elegance of Goryeo Buddhist art.
