Background Halo and Pedestal

In Buddhist sculpture, Buddha is often depicted with a round or boat-shaped halo surrounding the head or body, symbolizing the emanation of enlightenment. The background halo is often decorated with patterns or designs, which sometimes include a miniature figure called the “Nirmana-Buddha,” which symbolizes the innumerable forms that Buddha may transform into to save all sentient beings. In many Buddhist statues, the figure sits or stands on a pedestal, often shaped like a lotus, which protects the statue while enhancing the grandeur. In Buddhism, lotus flowers symbolize the state of nirvana, because they are known for blossoming without being tainted by the muddy soil or water from which they grow.
