Akatsuka Jitoku was a pivotal figure in the development of modern Japanese lacquerware, ingeniously blended traditional lacquering techniques inherited from his lineage with refined painterly skills. This piece is a dry lacquer container, distinguished by its pronounced convex form. The surface of the vessel is meticulously adorned with fine ridges that extend from the lid to the base, with small six-petal flower patterns arranged alternately along each line. This work was exhibited as an unfinished piece at the first Remodeled Exhibition of the Imperial Fine Arts Academy, the year Jitoku passed away, and later his son sold it to the Yi Royal Family Museum. Despite its unfinished status, this piece exemplifies Jitoku's masterful application of dry lacquer techniques on a metal framework, marking it as a profoundly significant final contribution to his oeuvre.
