This Buddhist sculpture was produced by Takamura Koun, the master of modern Japanese sculpture. The heavenly maiden is a character in the pantheon of Japanese Buddhism who oversees all arts and brings blessings. In the relevant esoteric Buddhist rituals, she is depicted to be wearing splendid decorations on her body and holding up her skirt with her right hand and a heavenly flower in her left hand. Instead of holding up the skirt, Koun's maiden lets her right hand hang down naturally, while holding a bowl full of flowers in her left hand to emphasize the existence of heavenly flowers. Though small in size, this statue is well-balanced in shape and beautiful with outstanding details completed using expert techniques.
