Mother Goddess
This sandstone relief depicts a voluptuous woman surrounded by children, iconography that is usually associated with the Buddhist goddess Hariti and the Jain goddess Ambika, both of whom symbolize fertility and offspring. In this work, the woman holds one child in her lap with her left arm, while feeding another child with her right arm. Although it does not quite convey the moderate beauty of artworks produced during the peak of the Gupta period, the statue still exhibits many of the characteristic features of Gupta sculpture, including a gentle face, natural rendering of the body, and delicate depiction of the hands, feet, and accessories.
