Bodhisattva
Originally, the term “bodhisattva” referred specifically to Shakyamuni Buddha prior to his enlightenment. With the rise of Mahayana Buddhism, however, the term came to be applied to all those who seek enlightenment not only for themselves, but for all sentient beings. Sculptures of bodhisattvas are usually modeled after members of the upper class, and are thus dressed in the finest attire of the day. This bodhisattva wears a skirt called a “dhoti,” with a shawl draped over his shoulders and diverse jewelry. The realistic depiction and dignified appearance of the bodhisattva convey the adept skills of the sculptor.
