These portraits donated by Mr. Heo Jang feature Heo Gye and Heo Seon, who were meritorious subjects, or Yeongsa Gongsin. The title,Yeongsa Gongsin, was given to subjects who helped suppress the revolt by Yu Hyo-rip in the sixth year of King Injo's reign, or in 1628. For a meritorious subject who achieved a distinguished feat for the country or the royal family, a royal letter recognizing the feat was granted along with a high position in the government and a prize. A meritorious subject was also honored by having his portrait done. Such portraits were themselves an important genre during the Joseon period. The portraits donated vividly express the appearances and characters of the figures and are important for research on portraiture of meritorious subjects of the Joseon period. These portraits donated by Mr. Heo Jang feature Heo Gye and Heo Seon, who were meritorious subjects, or Yeongsa Gongsin.
