Yun Du-seo, a literati painter, painted this portrait in memory of Sim Deuk-gyeong (1673-1710). The two were close to each other. It followed the traditional portrait pattern of the Joseon Period. This one features gentle brush strokes and elegant and light coloring. It is said that, upon receiving the portrait from Yun, Sim’s family all shed tears together, as they felt as if the dead had come alive, although the painter painted it purely from memory. The inscription also states that the painting portrayed the deceased very well.
