Buddhist Sculpture
This is one of the gilt-bronze Buddha statues found in the stone pagoda of Sujongsa Temple. The head is large compared to the other parts of the body, and is inclined forward. A “magic bead” is displayed in the front center of the conch-like hair, while a “white tuft of hair” is clearly visible in the center of the forehead. Such features as the large head, the forward inclination of the body, and the facial expression with a naïve smile are rarely seen in Buddhist statues from earlier periods. This statue displays a change in the style of Buddhist statues produced between the early Joseon and late Joseon Periods.
