Ink paintings of grapevines were common in Korea. Hwang Jip-jung was one of the artists who turned ink-drawn grapevines into a central subject for literati paintings alongside plum blossoms and bamboo. Yi Gye-ho (1574-1645), the creator of this image, was also skilled in painting grapevines. His work is largely characterized by the composition and arrangement of the vine, the wide variety of leaves and grapes, the contrast between darker and brighter inks, and attempts at producing a three-dimensional effect in the round grapes by diluting and changing the tones of the ink.
