The National Museum of Korea is pleased to host this special exhibition on ancient Chinese bronzeware in collaboration with the Shanghai Museum. In 1928, the excavation at the Yinxu ruins revealed the historic existence of the Shang dynasty which had been weilde in the mist. Subsequent excavations revealed that ancient Chinese bronzeware began to be produced in the Xia dynasty founded around the twentieth century BCE.
In ancient times, the kings themselves offered sacrifices to the gods before making important state decisions such as engaging in warfare, and bronze ritual items were produced with the utmost care and effort. Strange designs of monsters and unique forms characterize the features of ritual items for use at sacrifices to the gods. Bronzeware served as ritual items for religious use, but gradually became a means of demonstrating the power of kings and feudal lords. With the advent of ironware bronzeware shifted once again to become articles of everyday life.
Ancient Chinese bronzeware is a unique cultural heritage without any parallel in the world. This special exhibition allows visitors to learn about the evolution of ancient Chinese bronze culture by period, explore the designs and characters inscribed in bronzeware, and encounter aspects of Chinese history reflected in these inscriptions. We invite you to appreciate these bronzeware treasures from the Shanghai Museum that embody the ancient history of neighboring China.
