In a folded book, the outermost pages become the covers, and when a folded book was produced, it was common to attach several sheets of paper to the covers to enhance their thickness and adorn them splendidly with gold and silver.
Four floral medallion motifs are drawn, with a scroll design encircling each of them, and the title is written inside the rectangular section created in the center of the front cover. Below the title is a lotus pedestal, and an ornate cover is placed on top to emphasize that the book contains the noble words of Buddha. The quotation mark-like symbol before the title “Saddharmapundarika Sutra (The Lotus Sutra) Vol. 7” is called a “standing crane and crawling snake” due to its resemblance to the image. The symbol signifies the Sutra-opening Mantra, an incantation that purifies the mind before opening Buddhist sutras.
