This landscape painting is by Kawamura Manshu, a modern Japanese painter from Kyoto. Manshu studied under Yamamoto Shunkyo(1871–1933), who carried on the tradition of the Maruyama-Shijo school, one of Kyoto’s central art schools. While Shunkyo’s works are noted for their grand compositions and highly detailed contrasts that create a majestic atmosphere, Manshu took a different approach. He preferred to depict a calm sensibility through balanced compositions and delicate brushwork. The painting captures a rainy scene over a mountain lake adorned with vibrant autumn foliage. This type of rain, known as shigure, falls between late autumn and early winter. Manshu depicted the rain with short, irregular diagonal lines of white pigment, adding a sense of speed and movement. The mist, which envelops the island in the foreground, gently settles between the foothills and distant mountains, creating a tranquil atmosphere. In the center of the composition, the vivid oranges and yellows of the autumn leaves contrast sharply with the greens of the pine and cedar trees, giving the landscape a striking presence. This contrast is further emphasized in the foreground, where the rippling lake surface and the flight of three cormorants contrast with the rugged rocks, rendered using the axe-cut stroke, emphasizing their mass and texture. These dynamic contrasts come together harmoniously throughout the painting, reflecting Manshu’s intent to capture nature’s changing seasons and diverse moods. This work was exhibited at the Exhibition of the Ministry of Education in the fall of 1938. showcasing Manshu’s masterful balance of realism and tranquility in his approach to traditional Japanese landscape painting.
