Bronze Bowl with Inscription of “hou”

This Goguryeo bronze vessel was excavated from Houchong Tomb in Gyeongju, the former capital of the Silla Kingdom. The inscription on the base of the vessel has been interpreted to mean “the tenth hou vessel made in ulmyonyeon (415 CE) in celebration of King Gwanggaeto the Great.” Based on this inscription, researchers believe that this vessel was a gift from Goguryeo to Silla on the occasion of a memorial ceremony for King Gwanggaeto the Great, who died in 413 CE. The inscription also shows that vessels of this type were called “hou” at the time.
