One of the ways to add more solemnity to the transcription of Buddhist scriptures in a more elaborate and splendid manner was to draw a narrative illustration at the beginning of the manuscript. In general, the illustration captures a scene that encapsulates the main content of the scriptures.
This narrative illustration portrays the Leader of the Good chapter from the Avatamsaka Sutra. The screen on the right displays Vairocana Buddha preaching the Avatamsaka Sutra, surrounded by many bodhisattvas. In the center of the left screen is Meru Mountain, and from the palace on the summit of the mountain, Indra, mounted on an elephant, leads his troops to charge at the army of Asura (demon), depicting the passage saying that the merits that bodhisattvas can accumulate through relieving people are much greater than the force of Indra defeating the army of Asura.
