Stone Flood Marker

Stone Flood Marker
Originally installed at Cheonggye Stream during the Joseon period, this stone flood marker allowed people to easily gauge the water level in order to prepare for floods. Markings from 1 cheok (21.5 cm) to 10 cheok (215 cm) are incised on the front and back of the stone. The markings for 3, 6, and 9 cheok are each accompanied by a hole and a special inscription: “drought” for 3 cheok; “normal” for 6 cheok; and “flood” for 9 cheok. Thus, whenever the water rose above 6 cheok, people were warned to prepare for a flood. It is known that King Yeongjo conducted an extensive dredging of the stream in 1760, and two inscriptions on the stone indicate that further dredging was performed in 1773 and 1869.
