Departing in the Snow
On a dark and chilly winter’s evening, a seonbi (a learned sage) on a donkey sets out on a journey. As he crosses a bridge, he looks back, seemingly bidding farewell to the boy standing at the gate. This painting takes the form of sogyeong inmulhwa (literally, “small landscape figure painting”), which emphasizes the human figures while treating the landscape as a simplified backdrop. The precariously leaning cliff and the sharp, angular, bold ink strokes reflect the expressionistic techniques that were popular at the time.
