Plum Blossom Studio

Kim Sucheol established new frontiers for late-Joseon landscape painting through his fresh artistic sense and by boldly omitting subject matter and using simple brushstrokes. This painting depicts an anecdote about Lin Bu (林逋, 967-1028), a reclusive Northern Song Dynasty scholar who loved plum blossoms. The depiction of a guest visiting the scholar’s studio surrounded by plum blossoms in a snowy winterscape alludes to the arrival of spring.
