Pigeumjeong Pavilion
This landscape was painted by Kang Sehwang in 1789 at the age of seventy-seven. The subject of the painting, Pigeumjeong Pavilion, was rendered from memory after Kang’s return from Hoeyang, rather than being drawn directly on-site. Hoeyang, a county in Gangwon-do Province, was where his son had been appointed magistrate, and Kang passed by Pigeumjeong in Geumseong on his journey to visit him. The portrayal of the mountain ridges and overall composition in this painting reflects techniques characteristic of Chinese landscape painting, rather than the natural features of Korean mountain ranges.
