One Hundred Fans and Butterflies

The odd-numbered panels in this eight-panel folding screen show butterflies flying around strange rocks and flowers, while the even-numbered panels feature round and folding fans with images of butterflies, flowers, and landscapes. Nam Gyeu depicted butterflies based on minute observation. These butterflies are also brought to life by capturing the movements of a swarm of butterflies fluttering around flowers. The fan paintings are presumed to have been painted by Bak Gijun. It is believed that the butterfly paintings and fan paintings were originally created separately but later combined into a folding screen.
