Walking Leisurely with a Staff

Kim Huiseong (whose family originated in Jeonju) was a court painter active during the reign of King Yeongjo (r. 1724-1776). He participated in a project for copying of a portrait of King Sukjong (r. 1674-1720) in 1748 and in the production of Commemorative Paintings and Calligraphy on the Dredging Project of Chenggyecheon Stream in 1760. Despite his lofty reputation, only few of his paintings have survived. This painting featuring a figure standing idly with a staff while gazing at a pond deep in the mountains reflects Kim’s proficiency at painting. It also shows that Kim employed the Southern School painting style popular at the time.
