Black Dog Scratching Its Body

In this painting, a black dog under a tree in a field of grass is scratching its body with a hind paw. Kim Duryang, the painter of this work, was from the Gyeongju Kim clan that was known for producing court painters. King Yeongjo favored Kim to the extent that he bestowed the sobriquet Namri on him. Kim was said to have excelled at painting dogs. He meticulously painted dogs’ hair with fine brushstrokes. Here in this work, every strand of the dog’s fur was drawn in great detail, giving three-dimensionality to the bright and dark areas of the body. Such minuteness contrasts with the tree and weeds depicted roughly and sparsely in the background.
