This underdrawing depicts Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva sitting comfortably on a rock soaring out of the middle of the sea. The round nimbus and body halo behind the Bodhisattva serve as a compartment that emphasizes the center of the composition and its theme. The background of the body halo is divided into upper and lower sections.
This underdrawing displays characteristics of modern paintings of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, including a background divided into two tiers (heaven and the sea), transformed Buddhas and subordinates on clouds, and a white robe draped over the head. Moreover, the huge, round halo encircling the entire body of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva can be observed in Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva paintings produced in Seoul and the Gyeonggi-do Province region in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
