Buried inside graves, epitaph tablets chronicle the lives and achievements of the occupants in order to leave a record of their legacy posterity. The composition of such epitaphs was established during the Goryeo dynasty. This epitaph belongs to Chae Inbeom (蔡仁範, 934‒998), a scholar originally from the Southern Tang but who later became naturalized to Goryeo. It is written in regular script (楷書, Kr. haeseo) on a tablet with grid lines. This is not only the earliest extant example of the Goryeo period, but the earliest of all existing epitaphs in Korea.
