Bottle with Peony, White porcelain painted in underglaze cobalt-blue

This white porcelain bottle displays a form that was popular in the nineteenth century. It is decorated with peony spray design in cobalt-blue underglaze. Symbolizing wealth and prosperity, peonies were often employed as a decorative motif on white porcelain wares and as an auspicious symbol in paintings. On the outer bottom is incised the Chinese character “上,” indicating the bottle was for court use.
