Jar with Dragon and Cloud, White porcelain painted in underglaze cobalt-blue

The import of cobalt-blue pigment became possible again from the latter half of the seventeenth century, and ceremonial white porcelain jars with dragon designs symbolizing the dignity of the court resumed production. This example boasting a large, robust form extending more than fifty centimeters in height is decorated with a dragon striking a dynamic posture. It is presumed to have been used for holding flowers during royal rituals.
