Kundika with Waterside Landscape

Bottles with this distinctive form, characterized by a bent spout on one side and a long neck with a disc-shaped protrusion in the middle, are called “kundika,” from Sanskrit. This particular bottle, considered the representative example of a kundika from the Goryeo period, features a painterly waterscape design rendered in fine lines of inlaid silver, just 0.5 mm in width. Both the front and back of the bottle are decorated with a large willow tree near a pond, surrounded by ducks, geese, people who are fishing or boating, and an island of reeds. The bottle’s beauty has been enhanced by the harmony between the green tarnish of the bronze and the silver inlay.
