Aristotle
Greek sculptors always strived to capture the inner state or spiritual essence of their subject. Many early sculptures depicted character types who exempli!ed archetypal qualities, such as wise philosophers, decisive military commanders, or respected statesmen. But over time, the focus shifted towards highlighting the unique characteristics of real individuals.
Demonstrating this shift, this head of the renowned Greek philosopher Aristotle highlights his sunken cheeks, sparse hair, and intelligent and energetic expression. This work is based on an original sculpture by Lysippos, which was commissioned by Alexander the Great.
