Scene of Offering

This large jar, called an "amphora," is decorated with two different scenes of people making offerings at a small altar. On one side, a boy and girl perform a ritual pouring of wine as a sign of reverence to a diety. On the other side, two woemn who are both dressed in a chiton and himation are making offerings. The women on the right holds a phiale (libation bowl) and staff, while the woman on the left holds a jug and flowers. In both scenes, the top of the altar is decorated with a volute (spiral scroll), a common feature in ancient Greek art and architecture.
