Ceremonial Palanquin

This palanquin is coated with black lacquer and decorated with arrowhead and scroll patterns using a makie technique. Given the arrowhead pattern used as the crest of the daimyo of the Mori clan, which was based in present-day Hiroshima City, it is believed that this palanquin was used by a woman of the clan. Only the upper samurai class were able to use palanquins coated with black lacquer and decorated ornately with a family crest and a scroll pattern using a makie technique. The inside of the palanquin is adorned with colorful flower and bird paintings on a gold background.
