Manjushri Bodhisattva

Most sculptures from the Pala Empire were made from either bronze or stone, with the stone statues consisting primarily of steles made from gray or black stone from the Bihar and Bengal regions. In this relief, the bodhisattava Manjushri, who traditionally symbolizes wisdom, sits atop a lion in a relaxed posture, with hands forming the dharmachakra or “wheel-turning” mudra. Entwined around his left arm is a lotus stem that grips a sutra, also symbolizing wisdom. Manjushri is flanked by two bodhisattvas, with five smaller Buddha images above his head. An elephant head is carved in the center of the base, surrounded by kneeling devotees.
