This stele, produced in the Pala Empire of India, portrays eight major events from the life of Shakyamuni Buddha. The central image depicts the moment of enlightenment, with the Buddha seated in the lotus position and his hands forming the “earth-touching” mudra. Surrounding the central image are smaller depictions of seven other significant events from the Buddha’s life, including (clockwise from lower left) his birth, his first sermon, his descent from Trayastrimsha heaven, his death, his taming of the elephant Nalagiri, his miracles at Shravasti, and his acceptance of a monkey’s offering of honey. The halo bears an inscription of the Pratityasamutpada Gatha, and the name of the donor is inscribed on the base.
