This sarira reliquary was found in the Sakyamuni Buddha stupa of Bonginsa Temple, which was built by the royal palace during King Gwanghaegun’s reign. It was transferred to Japan at the time of the Japanese colonial rule, but was recovered in 1987. The lid of the silver sarira reliquary is carved with a dragon design, and the bottom has Chinese characters carved in a dotted line that say that it was made to pray for the longevity of the crown prince in 1620 (the 12th year of King Gwanghaegun’s reign). The lid exhibits a rare solid-gold lotus flower design, and has a lump of sarira.
